Cola: Is it the Real thing????

I just had to re post this.  I can't believe how popular this "drink" is.  It is so bad for us and yet so many can't do without it?

Cola: Real Thing or Real Junk?

By Denis Faye

Sure, soda pop is the biggest calorie source in the American diet. Sure, it may be a sugary-sweet drink that is partially responsible for the planet's obesity epidemic, according to a 2007 Yale University study. But frankly, there's not much real about cola. Heck, most American versions don't even have real sugar in it.

To prove this point, we've decided to take a look at the ingredients in a can of cola. Is there anything real in there? You tell us.

Soda Bottles
Carbonated WaterCarbonated water

Ingredient-wise, this is cola's get-out-of-jail-free card. Carbonated water—water injected with carbon dioxide gas—has received a bad rap over the years, but current studies suggest there's little wrong with it. The idea that the phosphorus (the "fizz") in bubbly water drains calcium from bones was shown to be untrue in a 2001 study by the Creighton University Osteoporosis Research Center in Nebraska. So if you give up the soda and stick to the soda water, you'll be in good shape.
High fructose corn syrup (HFCS)

For the uninitiated, HFCS is corn syrup that has gone through enzymatic processing to increase its fructose level. It's then mixed with un-enzymatic processed corn syrup to make a combo of fructose and glucose that can be used as a sweetener. Due to the massive amount of corn our country produces, HFCS is cheaper than white cane sugar and, therefore, the sweetener of choice for just about every American junk food you can think of.

There have been all kinds of theories and studies over the years claiming that HFCS is worse for you than other sugars. Conversely, the Corn Refiners Association has gone to great lengths to dispute this information, but it's a losing battle. They have yet to comment on the latest studies, one published in Environmental Health and another from the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy, both showing that HFCS can contain mercury.

Whomever you believe, this stuff just isn't good for you. One 12-ounce can (and who drinks just a can anymore?) contains 39 grams of simple carbohydrates, all from HFCS. With no fat, no protein, and no fiber, it's 140 calories of blood-sugar-spiking sweetness. It's like eating 9 teaspoons of table sugar. So no matter what you call it, what vegetable it's derived from, or how you process it, it's bad for you.
Caramel color

CaramelAlso known as caramel coloring, this is just sugar heated until it turns brown. However, the heating process to make class IV sulfite ammonia caramel coloring, the kind they put in soft drinks, requires ammonia. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, this doesn't affect the toxicological properties. A joint Food and Agriculture Organization/World Health Organization expert committee on food additives wasn't quite as sure and suggested a 0 to 200 milligram per kilogram of body weight limit on the stuff. Most colas don't appear to publish the amount of caramel color they use, so we have no idea how much you'll find in a Big Gulp.

Either way, in the U.S., guess what kind of sugar this stuff is made of? Yes, corn syrup (see: High Fructose Corn Syrup [HFCS]).
Phosphoric acid

ChemicalsPhosphoric acid is a chemical that gives colas their "tangy taste." It's much cheaper to use than more natural ingredients. The belief that phosphoric acid lowers bone density is contentious. While it's true that a 2006 study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that women who consume cola daily have lower bone density, that could also be because those soda drinkers were less inclined to drink calcium-rich beverages such as milk. Furthermore, the Creighton University study (see: Carbonated water) suggests that it wasn't the phosphoric acid causing the problem—rather, it was the caffeine.

Regardless, phosphoric acid makes an excellent rust remover for iron and steel. So think about that the next time you have a hankering for a cola.
Natural flavors

Most people believe the word "natural" means that these flavors are the good stuff. Nothing could be further from the truth. Eric Schlosser, in his amazing book Fast Food Nation, sums it up best. Basically, just because a flavor is "natural" doesn't mean it's healthier than an "artificial" flavor. In fact, sometimes the opposite can be true. The example Schlosser brings up is almond flavoring. "When almond flavor is derived from natural sources," he writes, "such as peach and apricot pits, it contains traces of hydrogen cyanide, a deadly poison."

Conversely, artificial almond flavor "derived through a different process (by mixing oil of clove and the banana flavor, amyl acetate) does not contain any cyanide."

Most colas' secret recipes are safely hidden in their natural ingredients. Given that it's one of the best-kept secrets in industrial history, props to you if you can figure out what you're drinking.
Caffeine

Coffee BeansConsidering that some of our supplements contain caffeine, it would be downright hypocritical to trash it here. The simple fact is that in small amounts caffeine is fine. In fact, it's an ergogenic aid, meaning that it can increase the capacity for mental or physical labor. However, if you get too carried away, it can lead to everything from peptic ulcers to sleep disorders to the above-mentioned bone density loss.

So if you're at risk for osteoporosis, you're probably going to want to pass on caffeine. Otherwise, you'll want to drink it in moderation.

How does this bode badly for soda? Simple. Pretty much every other source of caffeine around has some kind of benefit. Supplements have myriad benefits. Coffee and tea contain antioxidants. Even chocolate, in moderation, is said to be beneficial, with its antioxidants, flavonoids, and phenylethylamine—a mild mood enhancer. Why get it drinking soda, a beverage without a single other beneficial quality yet several detrimental ones?

So there you have it. Mix that all together, and you get cola. Heck, because it's so natural and "real," you should be able to make it at home with ingredients sitting in your kitchen pantry. Right? Right?

Who am I kidding? This stuff's junk. Real junk, but junk nonetheless.

SHAKEOLOGY Is HERE!

The long awaited Super Shake is now available. It is truly The Healthiest Meal of the Day.

It’s a protein shake, greens formulation, pre and probiotic supplement, anti-oxidant, phytonutrient, adaptogen, enzyme formulation all rolled into something that tastes like dessert. In short, it’s the smartest 140 calories you can put into your body.

One of the advisers in Beachbody wrote an answer to a key questions that was asked at the launch of Shakeology ;

Here is what he had to say (Thanks Steve)

?? Should I keep taking my Activit (or Peak Health) / Multi vitamin or supplement along with Shakeology?

The short answer is yes, but since Shakeology has a lot of vitamins in it already, this requires further explanation. First off, taking your vitamins with Shakeology will improve their bioavailability. It’s a perfect transport vehicle for most of your supplements. All of them, really, except for creatine, Recovery, and other sports specific supplements. As you’ve probably heard, you don’t get all the nutrients on the label of a vitamin, nor do you get all of the nutrients in the foods you eat. The better your diet is (more balanced, pH-wise, in short) the better it can utilize nutrients in the foods you eat. Shakeology will help with both. Next we need to address the RDA. It’s important to keep in mind that the RDA for everything is targeted for a subsistence level. An active person needs more, and it can be a lot more. When we try and decide how much more we should use the example of an extreme athlete. When you’re involved in something like the Tour de France, you CAN’T consume enough nutrients in a day to recover from what you’ve done. This is why drugs are used and why doping in sports is such a problem. With this in mind it’s easy to see how someone working construction would have a vastly different RDA than a computer programmer. So you can see how RDAs have little relevance to you, especially if you’re doing something like P90X. This is why you’ll want to continue to take your vitamins. As you get into better and better shape your nutrient needs continue to grow. The cool thing is that you get to eat more. The downside is that the harder you train the more you’re at risk for overtraining. And the best way to keep from overtraining is to eat well. The more nutrients your calories contain the better you are eating. There’s an old sports adage that states, “There is no such thing as overtraining. There is only undereating, undersleeping, and failure of will.” With Shakeology as a component of your diet you stand a better chance of checking off, at least, one part of this equation.

So.... I also want to add. It tastes GREAT! I have been enjoying both flavors (Green Berry and Chocholate) for the past few days. The shakes are very tasty. Even my Kids like it! :)
It is so great to know that I am getting my veggies and proper nutrition to fuel my body. It is so hard to do some days and this is a much more simple way to get that!

You can order now! Monthly Auto Ship is also available! Along with a 30 day guarantee!

If you are looking for a truly unique total nutrition shake SHAKEOLOGY is for you! Go to Shakeology.com for more info on the shake and the make up.

Here's a quick video clip too...

My ChaLEAN Extreme Experience!

Well, It's been just over 10 weeks since I started ChaLEAN Extreme. I am in the last Phase and 2 weeks away from "Completing" the program. (there is a lean for life maint. phase as well).

I have to say WOW!!! This has been such a great program. The nutrition plan was easy to keep to and follow. Very easy recipes and food choices. (With pictures!! love that)

To date over the past 10 weeks I am down 23 pounds and over 21 inches total. I can see improved definition in my Legs, Back, Triceps and biceps for sure. Pushups are so much easier and even the hard ones for me, the tricep or military pushups are even easier! My Cardio conditioning has also greatly improved! I can feel a big difference from day one for sure!

I have increased my weight that I lift on almost every exercise by as much as 15 pounds on some! The best thing is the workouts are so efficient I am done in 40 - 45 min max each day with most being 30 - 35 min.! Because of that I have not missed one workout in the 10 weeks. I managed to escape setbacks like colds and injuries for the 10 weeks (so far...knocking on wood) :)

I thought Phase 2 the Push phase was the hardest when I went through it since it uses much heavier weight (fail at 6 - 8 reps is the goal). Well, then I hit the Lean Phase. Here I work the upper and lower body at the same time. Heavy weight, balance moves, core, upper and lower body all at the same time. Also isolating 2 main muscle groups per session. WOW it's a killer. But I am really seeing the progress just 2 week into this phase.

I get to meet Chalene Johnson (creator of the workout) in 2 weeks! I will be happy to report my progress and thank her for such a fantastic program. I started the program just to see and show that Men could do it. It was not just for Women. Well that was certainly proven by me and many others. Do not let the fireball trainer fool you. This is an Extreme program for sure!

I give it a High recommendation for anyone that wants a good comprehensive weight lifting program to build lean muscle mass.! This will for sure prime you if you are already in great shape or if you have a way to go on your fitness journey. Fitness trainers will love it for more variety for their clients as many moves are very unique and targeted!

Some Body Mass Index Facts

What Does Your BMI Mean?Learn how your "body mass index" tips you off to health risks.by Sara Ryba, R.D., C.D.N.
The BMI (body mass index) is a general calculation used to help assess your body weight and risks for weight-related health problems. The BMI is a flexible guide and factors in a certain level of difference between individuals. Nevertheless, it is still a general tool – your specific body make-up ultimately determines your healthy weight range. One variable BMI fails to consider is lean body mass. A healthy, muscular individual with very low body fat still might be classified as "obese" using the BMI formula. Conversely, a thin person may fall within the healthy BMI range, but still have a percentage of body fat that is considered unhealthy. The following BMI ranges are guidelines, and are used to screen and monitor large populations to detect risk of weight-related disease. Use our BMI Calculator to determine your body mass index and what range you fall into.
Underweight
Less than 18.5
Healthy weight
18.5 to 24.9
Overweight
25.0 to 29.9
Obese
30 or higher
Other FactorsIn each individual, other data must be used to determine if a high BMI is associated with increased risk of disease and/or death. Your BMI alone is not diagnostic. After determining your score, here are a few of the other factors that may come into play.
If you are in the healthy weight range, consider your weight history. Has your BMI increased significantly over the past 2 - 5 years? If so, and it is not a result of increased weight training, this should raise a red flag, even if you are still within the healthy BMI range.
If you find yourself in the overweight range, but consider yourself lean and "in shape," you might be carrying a lot of weight in the form of muscle. And you may, in fact, be at a healthy weight.
There are other measurements, such as the waist-to-hip ratio and waist circumference, that can help you determine if you are carrying excess body fat in unhealthy places.
The Bottom Line on BMIGet to know your body. Learn what is healthy for you and discuss any concerns with your health care provider.

Becoming a coach for Great Results!

WOW, My first Blog! I am excited to join in on the blogging craze :) My name is Keith and I am pleased that you stopped by.

I will be writing some great reviews and info about Beachbody. First I want to start with something that really has changed my wife and I's life!

I was able to get fantastic results with Beachbody products. I used Power 90 and the Power 90 master series to shed 23 pounds and put on a bunch of new muscle. When I started I could not even do one push up. now I can keep up with the videos and even do a few with my 3 year old on my back :)

So, I wanted to take things to the next level. I now use Turbo Jam and P90X!

I needed more than just the workouts. I wanted to be able to show and help others with how I achieved success. Enter the Team Beachbody Coaching program!

I was amazed at how easy it was to become a coach. Just use the products and tell everyone what you did to lose the weight and get fit (this is easy since everyone asks) :)

I thought I had to be some fitness guru or a gym rat to be a good coach. man was I wrong. I just needed to be honest with people and care about them and their results. I have over 400 customers so far (given to me by Beachbody). I enjoy emailing and talking to those that want help. I am able to reach out to my community and the people I work with and offer a great solution for fitness.

For me I am still plugging away at my fitness plan and goals. Now as a coach I have that extra incentive and motivation to stay on track. I see some "junk food" that I would have otherwise eaten or binged on and now I say to myself, Nope, I can't do that or I can't miss my workouts. People are counting on me. This is really helping me take my fitness to the next level. I am on track to hit my goals this summer! I am very excited about that. It has been a few years since I felt fit and healthy. I am so happy I found Beachbody and the fantastic coach opportunity.

Oh and not only is it helping with my fitness goals, I am getting paid every week too! WOW, I get to help others, reach my goals and Get paid! I am so excited to share this with everyone I meet. Thanks to coaching my wife and i were able to do some of the extra things we may not have been able to do since we rely on only my income to get by (we have 3 small children 22 mth old twins and a 3 year old so fortunately my wife can be here with them). We had a great Birthday party for our 3 year old (turned 3 in March) and did not have to stress over paying for anything and was abler to spoil him a bit with some extra gifts. We went to Sea world, I got a new BBQ! :) and we purchased a huge outdoor table and chairs that we love. All of this was with the money we earned form coaching!. It may not sound like a lot but along with all the other extras we were able to get and throw some money in savings man it makes a big difference!

Well I will come back a bit later I'm sure to add more but wanted to start off with something I am very excited about this week!

If you want me to tell you more about how coaching can help with your physical or financial fitness just give me a shout (Keith@FreeFitCoach.com) or take a look at my website http://www.freefitcoach.com/ I would be thrilled to work with you on your fitness goals or to build your business too!
